Boijmans van Binnen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen celebrated it’s 175th anniversary with a tour of the museum building, which is currently under renovation. The museum opened it’s doors for five weeks in the summer of 2024. A unique opportunity to visit the building at a stage in its transition and to appreciate its architecture and experience art interventions.

With a number of interventions, we designed the path and signage through the building. The route is not only safe and practical, but also refers to the history of the museum building and connects it to dreams for the future. The path was laid out with building materials such as cords, nets and a specially inlaid floor of pink wooden boards. This covers all unevenness, allows visitors to move smoothly through the building, unlike an ordinary construction site. The shape of this floor subtly directs visitors’ walking direction and gaze. The orange nets made in collaboration with Earnest Studio, are a nod to the orange grids that can now be seen in the walls of the Bodon Hall. The canopy at the entrance draws visitors in, as it did in 1970 when there was also such a canopy for the Dalí exhibition. The round kiosks are inspired by an old reception desk and act as beacons for visitors to orient themselves.
