Rotterdam in Focus

Since the invention of photography, Rotterdam has been captured by both Dutch and international photographers. How did they view Rotterdam as a city during those 185 years? Seen through the lens of photographers such as Iwan Baan, Eva Besnyö, Otto Snoek, Hans Aarsman en Cas Oorthuys, Rotterdam in Focus shows how Rotterdam developed from a bustling provincial city into the vibrant art-architecture city we know today. With both historical photographs and recent work by more than 100 photographers, this book invites us to take a new look at the urban landscape: ranging from astonishing empty spaces to spectacular high-rises.

The story of Rotterdam’s urban development is told through the collections of the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the Royal Collections, Maria Austria Instituut, Nationale Nederlanden and the Rotterdam City Archives.
